Calls from school

The last couple of days have been non-stop calls from school. Evan's was the easy one, the speech therapist saying Evan won't be needing speech therapy any more, but does need to practice his R and L sounds at home to make them become second nature.

Sean's debate teacher has called me because of Sean's misbehavior in her class, she's at her wits end. He doesn't follow instructions, just does everything willy nilly. He seems to think the teacher doesn't know her subject, which she has been teaching for ten years, as well as he does, which he has been studying for ten hours. And then yesterday, I got a note from this teacher. Instead of working on researching his argument? Sean was making paper airplanes in class and flying them around the room. This after being told the other day to watch his behavior in her class. I sense Sean problems looming.

And now Ian's reading teacher has called me, because Ian spends most of his time in class backtalking her and making snide jokes.I asked her for some specific examples that I could use when talking to him, and truth be told, she sounds a little dry and humorless, but her rules are the rules, and if she keeps telling him to quit being silly in her class, he needs to respect that. I have a feeling this is one of those difficult teachers, but again, Ian has to learn to manage within the behavioral boundaries she expects. I recommended to her that she sit down with him before or after school and lay out clearly for him what her rules are.. her response was that that was why she is calling me.

I sense future issues with this teacher, and am documenting this here so that I will not forget it should I be called in for a chat with the principal.

Military recruiters

Just got a notice from Sean's school that they will be releasing personal information about their students to the US military recruiting offices, that this is actually part of that ill-begotten No Child Left Behind act, they're required to do it, and I have until Tuesday to submit in writing that this is not OK for my kid.

I wrote them a nice little letter which I will paraphrase here:

Dear Ponder High School,

Under no circumstances whatsoever, no matter what the "national need" may be, are you granted permission to release my son's personal information to the United States military recruiters. He is fifteen and has poor judgement due to his Asperger's Syndrome and I will not have these people taking advantage of that fact.

Further, my son was not brought into this world to be cannon fodder for GWB or any other president. If this is indeed part of the NCLB, why have GWB's own children been left behind and out of military service?

When Barbie and Jenna Bush enlist, we might consider it for our children. Until then, no McWhorter child in the Ponder public schools is to be handed over to the military machine.

Thank you,

Etc, etc, etc.

Simple multiplication

"Whatever you give a woman, she's going to multiply.

If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby.

If you give her a house, she'll give you a home.

If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal.
If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.

She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.

So - if you give her any crap,

- you will receive a ton of shit."
