Waterfalls
It's almost like there are these periods where our relationship is smooth and steady, and then there are times when it's like standing on the edge of this gorgeous, wonderful waterfall and just letting yourself drop, knowing that there's a safe pool of water ready to catch you at bottom. You take the plunge and you're in wayyyy over your head, but oh man, it's exhilarating, it's breathtaking, it's just incredible and you feel better than you ever have before and the water is cool and refreshing and exactly what you needed.

Sam is my waterfall.

Kinfolk

When Sam and I moved to the DFW area, we were a little bit in a daze over the fact that for the first time in either of our lives, we wouldn't be living within driving distance of extended family. In San Antonio we were near his parents and brother. In California I was near Uncle Jack, Amy, Koji and Debbie. In Boston, well, ya know, my sister, my grandmother, my aunt, my cousin Joe, etc.

This time, we were on our own, so to speak. And then just after we moved from the mobile home into this house, about three years ago now, Sam's father called to tell us that Sam's cousin Chris and his family were living just down the road in Denton. ! and ! again! Nearby family!

Chris's wife Melissa and I hit it off immediately. Melissa is a sweet woman, a little flaky like me at times, and the family are strong Christians. Melissa has one daughter through her first marriage, Lauren, and she and Chris made two lovely little girls, Madeline and Emma Lee together. The girls are, respectively, 13, 5 and 3.

Lauren is, let me see if I can get this straight. She is my step cousin in law. :D

Lauren has a little boyfriend here in Ponder who she met at our church, the best friend of my friend Tori's son. Lately Lauren has taken to calling me at horrible times of the morning (6 AM anybody) on a Sunday to ask if Sam would come get her to take her to church. I know that this is so she can see her boyfriend, and it's been starting to grate on me.

Last night Lauren stayed over. She was out with the bf and his folks in the early evening, then back here to crash for church in the morning. I took the opportunity to talk to her about it.

What it boiled down to was I love having her around, I MISS having a teenage girl around the joint, but I don't want her to just use us as a launching pad for her social life. That if she's coming over, she needs to spend some time visiting with the family as well as with the boyfriend.

Thank heavens, she understood. Because she's a pretty cool kid and I enjoy her company.

In other news, I threw up last night and feel shaky today.
