Email I sent today

Today I sent an email to one of my closest, most loved friends. I am putting it here so that I won't lose it, and because I just want to show the world how much I love this woman. :)

Hey Debbie,

Been doing a lot of thinking lately, and reminiscing about two young women who thought they were so grown up and aware, and I realized I need to say some things to you. They're kind of important.

When I met you, I was a fairly recent transplant from Boston, homesick and lonely as hell. I had made one good friend since my move, and she had moved to Illinois about a month before you and I met, and I never heard from her again.

So I was homesick and I was lonely, and into my life walked this OTHER homesick and lonely woman with a smile as bright as the sun, an optimistic outlook, and the kindest heart I've ever run across.

We've had our ups and our downs, you and me. But somehow, the friendship we built in those early days before Talon had teeth has been one of the most enduring relationships of my life, and I am so grateful for that.

I couldn't have chosen a better person to take care of our daughter when I couldn't be there to do it any more. You love her as if she were your own, born to you. I know this, I see the fierce love and hopes you have for her, they shine in your eyes. And the fact that you are the true love of Koji's life just makes it all the better. I will always love Koji in that special bizarre way that he and I love each other, and I am so glad that you give him so much happiness, and that in him you finally have a man who loves and respects you the way you deserve to be.

I guess what I'm saying is thank you for the last 22 years. Thank you for being there, for teaching me about gassy babies who need burping, for teaching me to look for the good in people, for being a mother to our little girl, a partner to one of my dearest friends, and for being my friend.

Merry Christmas, Debbie. :) I love you.
